Press Release: Rassias Center and Dickey Center Collaborate for Global Health Fellows

Language and Culture Lessons for Global Health Fellows

June 15, 2026

Hanover, NH - Dartmouth’s Rassias Center for World Languages and Cultures and Dickey Center for International Understanding recently collaborated on a language and culture program for Global Health Fellows prior to a trip to Peru.

For the first time this spring, Global Health Fellows had the opportunity to go on an immersive trip to explore local, community-led programs across the globe. The spring 2026 program was to Peru visiting schools and community clinics to bridge the connection between the classroom and the lived experiences of populations that students study throughout the year.

The Dickey Center approached the Rassias Center about providing a language and cultural program for the Global Health Fellows cohort with a few goals in mind. These included improving Spanish language skills, building cultural awareness, and building community within the cohort prior to traveling together.

Over five sessions, the group expanded their language skills, with three students from the group acting as drill instructors because of previous language experience. They also got a taste of some of the cultural traditions they would be exposed to during their trip. More importantly, the students were able to begin to develop as a cohort while professionally and personally supporting each other.

The immersion trip was a success which can be read about in more detail here: https://journeys.dartmouth.edu/ghfperu2026/.
